OSHA Compliant Catwalk Suspended Walkway Installation
and Fall Protection Equipment and Training

Industrial maintenance and service personnel and theatrical stage workers often require access to extreme height working surfaces. These work areas are in HVAC piping rooms or in the eaves and under roof structures of arenas, stadiums and other entertainment facilities. Catwalks and elevated walkways also are required when your workers need to bridge an expanse or get access across an otherwise hazardous work area outdoors. These situations may include access to truck tops and at rail car sidings for load/unload operations. Your facility and your suspended walkway access requirements are unique, as are your state and local building codes.

DFP Provides a Customized Solution to Fall Protection in Your Facility.

Your requirement may be a simple, modular walkway or catwalk that can be shipped directly to you for installation in the field. You can rely on DFP for cost-saving, modular walkway components and catwalks that can be cut, fabricated and installed by your personnel at your facility.

In other instances building code regulations may require having the catwalk system combined with structural elements already in place such as elevated work platforms or ceiling support trusses. In these situations, Diversified Fall Protection engineers can help determine your overall needs and engineer, fabricate and install a system for access. Your walkways may include ladders, catwalks and a variety of hanging, suspended or elevated work platforms for workers to reach target maintenance sites.

Fall Protection for Workers on Catwalks

One of the best ways to create a safe working environment on catwalks is to assure that your employees are thoroughly trained in fall prevention techniques. For example, it is important to avoid unnecessary weight shifts while working or moving on the catwalk. Provide safe access to suspended walkways by use of permanent, stationary ladders. Aerial lifts or other appropriate means should be used when heavy or bulky equipment or materials must be moved up to an elevated walkway.

Avoiding catwalk falls and other accidents often starts with the preferred method - preventing workers from reaching the dangerous edge. Catwalk construction typically features a sturdy, permanent guardrail system along with lifeline tie-offs.

In addition, OSHA requires that workers have and use proper personal fall protection equipment.

Proper fall protection systems allow workers to tie off when working at heights. A fall restraint system tethers your worker (often using a lanyard and a single point anchor) preventing him or her from reaching the edge where the potential for a fall exists. These systems do not need to support the full weight of a worker (as would a personal fall restraint system) and so are generally less elaborate. In situations where your work force needs full access to a working edge will the fall protection system design call for a personal fall arrest system - for example a full body harness connected to a lanyard shock cord.
