Michigan Small Businesses Can Apply for Up to $5,000 in Workplace Safety Grants

Michigan employers with 250 or fewer employees companywide can apply for matching grants to help purchase safety equipment and related training through the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (MIOSHA) Workplace Improvement to Safety and Health program, known as MIWISH.

The program provides a dollar-for-dollar match of up to $5,000. For example, an approved $10,000 project could receive $5,000 in grant funding, with the employer covering the remaining $5,000. The current grant cycle opened October 1, 2026, and awards will continue until funding is exhausted.

“Small businesses often know exactly what safety improvements they need, but the cost of new equipment can be a barrier,” said MIOSHA Director Bart Pickelman.

Fall protection equipment has received funding through the program. MIOSHA’s latest announcement highlights a previous recipient that purchased full-body harnesses and Type II safety helmets. However, MIOSHA evaluates applications individually; there is no list of preapproved equipment.

To qualify, employers must operate under MIOSHA’s jurisdiction, complete a site-specific hazard evaluation supporting the purchase, and demonstrate how the project will reduce employee injury or illness risks. Applicants must also have the experience and commitment needed to complete the project.

MIWISH operates through reimbursement, with recipients required to submit proof of payment and photos or videos of approved equipment or projects within the 120-day contract period.

Review eligibility requirements and apply through MIOSHA or contact the grant administrator at 517-647-3155.
