Automatic Roof Hatch Opener
The SafePro Automatic Roof Hatch Opener (ARHO) lets workers unlock, open, close, latch and relock a roof hatch from floor level, reducing the need to handle the hatch lid while positioned on an access ladder. The system is designed for new or retrofit installations on hinged commercial roof hatches and uses an electric actuator to control the hatch from below.
The standard 110V system can be operated with a wall-mounted keypad or handheld remote and can also be integrated with compatible building access-control systems. Standard configurations are available for common 30", 36" and 48" hatch sizes, with a double-actuator option for larger hatches.
Design Considerations
The Automatic Roof Hatch Opener addresses the access side of roof-hatch safety by allowing the hatch to be operated before a worker reaches the top of the ladder. Key considerations include:
- Ground-level operation – Automatically unlock, open, close, latch and relock the hatch using the powered actuator system.
- Retrofit compatibility – Designed to fit most brands of flat-lid, hinged commercial roof hatches. Confirm the existing hatch condition, size and geometry before installation.
- Access control – Operate the system using the supplied keypad or handheld remote, or integrate it with compatible building security and access-control systems.
- Power and backup – The recommended configuration uses 110VAC power. An optional lithium-ion backup battery is available for continued operation during power interruptions.
- Simple installation – The system mounts to the hatch lid and hinged-side hatch structure with adjustable steel brackets and supplied hardware. Factory pre-assembly is also available when ordered with a new roof hatch.
- Durable construction – Heavy-duty hot-rolled steel mounting components, zinc-plated hardware and a black finish are designed for permanent rooftop use.
Roof Hatch Safety and OSHA Compliance
SafePro describes the Automatic Roof Hatch Opener as an OSHA/Cal-OSHA compliant roof-access solution. By allowing the hatch to be opened and closed from below, the system can reduce the exposure created when a worker must manipulate a heavy or locked hatch while climbing a ladder.
The opener and a roof hatch guardrail address different hazards. The opener improves the access sequence; where fall protection around the open hatch is required, the complete access point should also include appropriate guarding, gates and other measures for the specific installation.
